I've installed debina on a new Dell Inspiron not more then 2 months ago. I modified an existing debian-testing cd to include brltty in the onboard initrd.gz boot-image. Remind me if I haven't done this in about 2 weeks or so, I'll put the script together which got this working and dump it on the list. It's a bit tricky, but it worked fine for me (apart from some error on my part which made brltty not starting anutomatically upon botting). One thing I'd have to find out is howto get the debconf=readline install-interface instead of the dialog-one (which I can work nicely with, provided framebuffer is disabled). You need at least 1.4gb of diskspace to try this and to cimpile brltty yourself as well.
