well, for one thing, 0.6 alpha now has some support for a yasr-type environment though I haven't used it. For another, if you choose emacspeak, you are started out with a file already loaded which tells you, among other things, how to get out to the shell. So while I agree that in a lot of ways something that just lets you log into a console is easier in many ways, there are options.
