It is a great project and it already been started and is usualable
with gocr now an has been for two years.  It is called socrates and
can be found at the pserver:anonymous@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:/usr/src/CVS
in the module socrates.

Now admittedly it isn't very fancy but that is mostly because when I
wrote it gocr was a pretty poor ocr engine.  It may have gotten better
I'm not sure.  There is another package or engine which is making
improvements pretty quickly which is ocrad and it is a gnu project.
You might like to interface socrates with ocrad as well as gocr that
would be really useful.

Socrates has been publicly discussed on the linux-speakup.org site in
projects and on the speakup list for years so this level of ignorence
is quite baffling to me.
