Hi. Viavoice doesn't work on modern Linux distros. Your Slackware version is one. Your software synth options are eflite, DEQTalk software, and others I forget ow. I'm not a Slackware user, but I believe you will need to build eflite and flite locally. The DEQTalk software synth is $50 from fonix. You can get it att http://www.fonix.com/products/dectalk/rt_linux/ Both eflite and DECQTalk will work with emacspeak. You might try using a PCMCIA serial adapter to connect your external symth.
