I work with a lot of different machines and operating systems in the course of a day and had to have a hardware synth that was not only able to work in windows and linux but also be priced such that I didn't have to drag a single synth from machine to machine. I settled on the Lite Talk. In windows it works well with JFW and in linux I use both speakup and emacspeak.
