An idea for just maybe ultimately getting cursed gtk working. Have all of
X11 installed and run the startx command. Wait for your sound card to
play a bit of music, then hit the three key combination
right-control+right-alt+backspace and wait. You should hear a screen
reader announce things shutting down and when that's all over with hit
return and you should be back at your text prompt. Having run startx and
then having shut it down may no guarrantee properly set up the display for
you. xterm also uses display so if you can get past the display problem
with xterm, you may also be able to get past it in cursed gtk when you run
inside of it.
