And, did you check your lilo.conf and rerun lilo? Or grub, if you're
using grub?
iAlso, you are now using the new Speakup which is different from the old
one. So, for now, you have to log in blind as root and issue:

setserial /dev/ttySX uart none
modprobe speakup_[synth.keyword]

where X is the port you're synth is attached on and
[synth.keyword] is the Speakup designation for your synth, e.g. ltlk for
Litetalk, dectlk for the DEC-Talk Express, etc.

Of course, if you're using an internal synth, skip the setserial part of
this.

You can put these commands in a script.
