Lorenzo, Some time ago I wanted my contraction table to default to None. I got it somehow - possibly during the ./configure--but I can't remember anything except that it took a long time for some reason. Just now I tried to set it back to the default and found, as you did, that it doesn't seem to take for some reason. The preferences file was changed (in my case it's /etc/brltty/brltty-al.prefs) but it didn't have any effect. So I added this line to /etc/brltty.conf: contraction-table en-us-g2.ctb Then from the prefs menu I saved 6-dot text style and I now have contracted Braille when I start brltty.
