Are you referring to an Intel 8X0 chip of some kind? 

If so, what sound drivers are you using? That chip may not work
correctly with the OSS drivers. Is that what you're using? If so, you
should get ALSA.

ALSA RPMs available from ftp.freshrpms.net. Or, via Debian Package
Manager, or compile them from source, etc.
