Where in the UK? Have you found your local LUG?

http://www.lug.org.uk/

Just the kind of thing LUG members are for, honest. I doubt you'll need
their help, but I suggest you get in touch, as they can advise on the
other aspects of getting started, part of the goal of free software is
to build community spirit, and I'm sure within a few weeks you'll be
repaying them by explaining the same things to newer newbies.

BRLTTY supports Braille Wave according to the website - best I can do,
sorry.

Knoppix CDs are bootable Linux CDs that fire up BRLTTY during boot - no
one here has told me if they work well enough to use from the bootable
CD. But as far as making it easy on your family that is about as easy as
it is going to get I suspect.

Knoppix allows you to try out Linux without fiddling with the contents
of your hard disk (it makes and runs from a RAM disk), but if you are
happy you can type the magic command and you have a slightly modified
version of Debian Linux on your hard drive.

If you promise to document your experiences, good and bad, I'll happily
send you a Knoppix CD to try, gratis, although with no broadband here
give me a few days if you'd like an up to date one.
