To test your package before you go and replace it you could try the following. First do a locate mysql.server. If it's not found but other things are found like mysqladmin; you have a broken package. If mysql.server is found, try putting the full path to mysql.server and mysql.server start into one of the system's start up files like rc.local. Then reboot the system and check by doing dmesg >dmesg.log and read the last lines.
