It's possible that the cd-rom has nothing to do with your problems. Can you ask someone to read the PC boot process messages to you, as you switch on the computer? Usually messages displayed include lines such as: IDE1 MASTER =XXXX IDE1 SLAVE =YYYY IDE2 MASTER =TOSHIBA XYZ 123456 CDROM At least, that's what they do on my machine.
