did you try compiling it with make bzImage? It creates a compressed kernel
image for big kernels: my kernel is actually smaller the RH shipped one and
works fine: one more thing that is better you learn to live with (that,
perhaps, I wouldn't know how to live without) is modules; this is a much more
flexible way of administering computer resources.
