thanks for the hint. I deleted the binaries with -musl and now VSCode picks up the right compiler:
C = /opt/agl-sdk/14.0.0-aarch64/sysroots/x86_64-aglsdk-linux/usr/bin/aarch64-agl-linux/aarch64-agl-linux-gcc
CXX = /opt/agl-sdk/14.0.0-aarch64/sysroots/x86_64-aglsdk-linux/usr/bin/aarch64-agl-linux/aarch64-agl-linux-g++
