thanks a lot for your reply. That is what I've been doing so far. As I mentioned in my first post I had to set RPI_USE_U_BOOT = „0" to be able to boot when I add dtoverlay=pwm in config.txt. Else I get a "Synchronous Abort" handler, esr 0x96000004.
Now I have created a combined full dtb as suggested by Jan-Simon but in my view this just seems to be a workaround. I think this ideally this should not be necessary and I would prefer to avoid it.
I really would like to understand why overlaying the pwm.dtbo does not work. If I have a look at the variable RPI_KERNEL_DEVICETREE_OVERLAYS in bsp/meta-raspberrypi/conf/machine/include/rpi-base.inc other overlays like vc4-fkms-v3d.dtbo are being applied and then added to the config.txt, and that works. So why it does not work for pwm.dtbo when I do the same? In your opinion would not that be the right approach to load the pwm.dtbo or am I missing something?
After discussing this with Andrei Gherzan, the mantainer of the meta-raspberrypi layer in Yocto I have posted my question in the u-boot mailing list. Let's see if they can provide some support.
Best regards,
Carles
