At leat on a qemu VM I set up a virtual CAN interface. Here is what I use:

modprobe vcan
ip link add can0 type vcan
ip link set can0 up

You could change "can0" to any name you want it doesn't matter but you should not use an already existing one :)

If you want to use it with the default Low CAN service, you should named it "can0" then because the default configuration use this name.
