It looks like raid_set->sets is a list_head that serves both as the list head of a master set, and simultaneously as the next/prev sibling for sub sets. Because of this, list_empty() is true for both an independent raid_set, and also for the subset of a master/subset pair, so you can't tell the difference, right?
