I take your statement to mean that I could step through one of the numerous examples of hdparm tuning on the web (Such as http://tldp.org/LDP/solrhe/Securing-Optimizing-Linux-RH-Edition-v1.3/chap6se c74.html) without causing any damage? Also.. for my setup, sda is the Windows XP side (NTFS). Should I only mess with the linux side (sdb)? Yes, you would use the device node of the disk or disks that are part of the array. So hdparm -d 1 /dev/sda would enable dma for sda, the first drive in the array. I don't think trying to do this with the device mapper nodes would work.
