I've not been following the thread, so apologies if this is irrelevant.

Is the crash happening during initial metadata probing? If so, all
format handlers are given a chance to get a look at the device and claim
it if it contains their metadata type.

E.g. I found an nvidia handler bug recently that was being triggered on
a platform that isn't even able to use dmraid type hardware.
