Hello Heinz, I gonna start now from scratch on a test machine. First, i attach two identicale drive (2x10GB) to the onboard controller (PDC20276) in a mirror-raid (1x2 mirror), then I boot the FC2-DVD when it commes to disk-druid, I see two sepperate drives (no mirror). What need I do then, install FC2 on the first or second drive? Second, I update my system with the latest kernel en source-code 2.6.8-1.521 , patch the kernel with the patch from http://sources.redhat.com/dm/patches.htm (2.6.8.1-udm1). Start menuconfig; Device drivers ---> Multi-device support (raid and LVM) ---> . What do I take then âbuilt-inâ or âmoduleâ for âRAID1 (mirroring mode)â and âdevice-mapper supportâ? Third, recompile the kernel (make dep, clean, bzImage, modules, modules_install, install).Install the rpm from http://people.redhat.com/~heinzm/sw/dmraid/ (dmraid-1.0.0-rc3.i386.rpm), then reboot into the new kernel â2.6.8-1.521customâ and run "dmraid -ay" Do I have this right? I have now installed one drive(10GB)on the raid-controller(1+0 stripe). I had installed FC2 on that drive, updated to the latest kernel 2.6.8-1.521, I also installed the source-code of that kernel. Than I had read the dmraid readme file, I downloaded 2.6.8.1-udm1 from http://sources.redhat.com/dm/patches.html did what the say: > > > cd /tmp > > tar jxvf 2.6.8.1-udm1.tar.bz2 > > cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-1.521 > > cat /tmp/2.6.8.1-udm1/*.patch | patch -p1 > > Questions: > > 1.Source-code is now patched, do i need recompile the kernel? Yes, of course. > > 2.Howdo I enable device, including mirror? You need to build dmraid or use the provided i386 RPM. Run "dmraid -ay" after you build and booted the 2.6.8.1-udm1 kernel. > > 3.Is device mapper, userpace installed by default in a 2.6 kernel, I can > only find source tarballs for kernel 2.4 at http://sources.redhat.com/dm/ Userspace source code on sources.redhat.com for device-mapper is for 2.4 and 2.6. It only says that the userspace tarball include some specific 2.4 kernel patches as well. Ignore them if you play with 2.6. > > 4.When do I need to install the second drive, to put them in a mirror-raid, afther I installed the software or before? Put the 2nd drive in the set using the BIOS.
