I feel somewhat out of options now. Things I'd like to know:

Yes but it's really painfull
- is it possible to use the Promise controller as a simple IDE controller somehow without the Promise BIOS complaining? In that case I'd like to run Linux software RAID on it, and boot from it.
Yes this board will install both 8.0 and 9.0 out of the box. (I don't remember if this board has the partition table update bug in 8.0.) What you need to do is create an arrays for each drive in the promise bios. Each with only a single drive in it. This gives bios drives to boot off of.
Also the newer bios revs of intel's boards have the option in the motherboard to revert the promise controller to an ide controller. I'm not sure about this board.
- should I forget the Promise controller and use the i845 internal IDENote that they only tested 7.2 or 7.3. Intel provides a drivers disk for 7.2 and 7.3 which will install quite easily;-(

me the Promise controller is "compatible", ease of install 100%. But -
HOW??
Any kind of help is appreciated. I've spent about a week trying to install Linux on that machine now, thinking the problems I have are my fault. But I'm not so sure anymore.
