ATA vs SoftwareRAID

Hi there
I am a Newbie concerning RAID, but I got complete small Server for
cheap, so I did not first check any Hardware-Compatiblity.

I have a FastTrak100-PCI-Card with 4x 60GB IBM HDDs on a TYAN
Thunderbold Dual Prozessor Mainboard with 2x PentiumIII and Adaptec
SCSI-Contoller AIC-7896 onboard

Now I want to set up a Debian-Woody-System mostly used as Gateway,
Server,Proxy etc. and as file-server.

I planned on using SoftwareRAID and setting up a small RAID1
Boot-Partition, and the others RAID5. I installed the system first on an
extra HD and then moved the system onto the RAID-Partitions. It seems to
work quite well, but I can not boot direkly of the RAID-Disks (I tried
almost everything with LILO to get it to boot, but I think there are
some Problems with the SCSI-onboard)
So I have to use the MBR (hda) of the extra HD and it works, even changing
form there to the MBR (hde) on the Raid-Disk and booting works.
Does anyone know if it works to boot direkt of the off-board
Raid-Partitions? and how do you have to set up LILO (or any other
Boot-Loader)?

Does it work with ataraid instaed of md? Has anyone collected experiences
she could share with me?
If it gonna work with SoftwareRaid, why should I use the stupid Hardware
Raid with only level 0/1/10 supported ?

Can anybody pointout to me advantages of the ATARAID?

cu klaus
