Well hardware raid is just about always slower than software
raid (unless you have REALLY expensive hw raid, like EMC Fibre channel
stuff). The reason for that is that the CPU on such cards is several
orders of magnitude slower than your PC's CPU.

Now in normal use (eg not benchmarks), the (battery backed) cache ram on
such cards buffer enough to not make that a problem (and make it
actually faster); and it also offloads your cpu so the frames per second
in quake ]I[ are a bit higher....
