Thanks! That was the tip I needed. I'm now running 2.4.2-2smp on the RH-7.2 
box:

[root@hewes darren]# rpm -q redhat-release
redhat-release-7.2-1
[root@hewes darren]# uname -a
Linux hewes.dazza.org 2.4.2-2smp #1 SMP Sun Apr 8 20:21:34 EDT 2001 i686 
unknown

with the drives mounted as ext2. Promise's native ft.o insmods perfectly, and
I've got my RAID array back. THANKS!!

Incidentally, I got this from Promise today regarding the release of a ft.o 
for RedHat-7.2:
