swapon problem

Under three different kernels 2.4.12-ac5, 2.4.13-pre5 and Rawhide 2.4.9-0.18
I attempt the following and it fails...

# swapon /dev/ataraid/d0p3
swapon: /dev/ataraid/d0p3: Invalid argument

What am I doing wrong?
