I think I might be doing the same thing wrong (I have a Promise FastTrak TX4 100 [20270])... so you mean when I compile the kernel I should:

Well you combined two types of software raid.... that went wrong. You must
choose to either use the promise software raid or the traditional "MD" linux
software raid. Both at once will not wrok....
