It's usually not worth it. Doing echo 511 > /proc/sys/vm/max-readahead might be worth it if you have a kernel where that flag exists... (And specifying "ide3=ata66" on the lilo/kernel commandline might help if you have a special 80 ribbon IDE UDMA/100 cable)
