Thanks for the info on the Major/Minor device numbers.

I am going to try the 2.4.9-ac7 patch with the additional devices.

To all Highpoint Linux users :

I hope anybody can help to install Linux on my Highpoint 370A controller.
I'm trying this for over a month and I'm really hopeless. First here are my
system specifications I order to find the cause :

Amd 1200 FSB 266.
Epox 8k7a+ including Highpoint 370A onboard RAID.
512 Hyundai DDR.
2 X 40 GB IBM 40GPX deskstar 7200RPM

Software :

Redhat 7.1
370 drivers from highpoint-tech.com on disk
HPT370 UDMA/ATA100 RAID Controller Redhat Linux Installation Guide.

Connected physically the disks on primary and secondaire controller. In the
Highpoint BIOS I made a RAID 0 stripe array (64). First did an format
(/s/u). Booting RH from cd. did expert text option. Loading 370 drivers from
disk. Selected custom install and specified everyting to install.

This procudure I've tried for over 10 times, first there was an Installation
Error (attachement). Unclear to me.
A couple of times everything seems to be OK. and Installation completed
appears.
Followed by the instructions of the Raid Controller Redhat Guide I had to
replace the installed kernel with a new kernel.
Alt F2.

# chroot /mnt/sysimage
# mount /mnt/floppy
# sh /mnt/floppy/370postinstall
# umount /mnt/floppy

This was no problem, so return to the setup screen to press enter to finish
the setup.
Well I waited 15 minutes but there was no autmatically reboot. (maybe this
is correct?).

After a manual reboot, Lilo loaded correcly.
but then this error is given :

Partition check:
sda:
VFS : Cannot open root device "801" or 08:01
Please append a correct "root =" boot option
Kernel panic : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 08:01

Well, I hope somebody would like to tell me how to install linux in
combination with the highpoint chipset.

Thanks,
Cornee Karels

Hi,
you probably use the closed-source Highpoint driver and this mailing
list is about the open-source ataraid driver. You probably have to ask
the Highpoint support.

Greetings Helge Lenz.

This is related to my: "Re: Problems with the Promise Fastrak100 and
2.4.8-ac7 (Alan Miles) (Alan Miles)" entries to this forum (although I am
now using 2.4.9-ac5 - however my problems are the same).

My Promise Fast Trak100 Raid controller has two id's on boot:

1/ Two identical drives on one unit Raid 0 -Striped
2/ Separate drive on the other id Raid 0 -Striped

Now the pdcraid MAKEDEV script makes the devices for /dev/ataraid/d0,
/dev/ataraid/d0p[0-1]([0-9])*

These have a major number of 114.

I would assume I need /dev/ataraid/d1, /dev/ataraid/d1p[0-1]([0-9])*
devices, but I don't know what Major Numbers to use.

My problem is to installing the agpgart for my Geforce 2 MX.

I am a newby in linux and tried to compile the Alan Cox Kernel 2.4.6-ac with
the patches as a second Kernel on my System.

All goes well during Installation of the Kernel and the script for the
dev/ataraid devices.

Now I have problems with your Makefile. I don´t now in which directory I
have
to install your driver to run the Makefile for my new Kernel.
The Makefile look always to my old kernelversion and not to the new one.
I have packed the old Linux-2.4.2-2 Kernel in an Archiv, it is enough?
I have now two directories in lib/modules.
What do I wrong?

[root@localhost ataraid]# make
cc -g -I/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include -O2 -march=i686
-fomit-frame-point
er -Wall -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -DMODVERSIONS -Wno-unused -include
/lib/modules/
`uname -r`/build/include/linux/modversions.h -c -o ataraid.o ataraid.c
In file included from ataraid.c:29:
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/build/include/linux/swap.h:104: parse error before `*'
make: *** [ataraid.o] Fehler 1

I tried the new driver from Promise, but with the new driver 1.09 a
installation of Redhat isn´t possible.

I look for new drivers on the promise site and found this:

[08-31-01] The RedHat drivers have been temporarily removed. Please check
back in a few days.

They have have found theire failure, I think.

Excuse me for my bad english

Best Regards from Germany

Red Hat has noth to do with the Promise propriatry driver.
In fact, once you load that into your kernel, we KNOW things will go funny
in your system.....

Also, there was a minor issue with mtrr's in the original Red Hat Linux 7.1
kernel, that has been fixed in the 2.4.3-12 errata kernel Red Hat releases
several months ago. But you can't use that because Promise doesn't support
that kernel with their driver :(

Hello!

I use linux RedHat 7.1 with kernel 2.4.2-2
I installed a new server with a Promise FastTrak100 TX4 (v2.00.0 build 11),
configured with:

4 HDD IBM 41Gb CHS:16383/16/83
configured for stripping + mirroring

When I boot from the rescue mode of the RH7.1 CdRom and then insert the
module
ft.o from Promise, there is no problem:
I can access the disks as /dev/sda (that's the normal behaviour).

But, when I boot from the device itself, it hangs because the kernel can't
mount
the root device /dev/sda3.

Here is an excerpt from what prints out when I boot:
...
Loading ft module
Promise FastTrak Series Linux Driver v1.20 (build 9)
scsi0 : FASTTRAK
scsi1 : FASTTRAK
  Vendor: Promise Model: 2X2 Mirror/RAID1 Rev: 1.10
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
VFS: Cannot open root device "803" or 08:03
Please append a correct "root" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:03

and then: nothing :)

Here is the partition table of /dev/sda

Disk /dev/sda: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 78201 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Type
Mount
Point
/dev/sda1 1 1025 1049584 Linux swap
<swap>
/dev/sda2 1026 1076 52224 Linux
/boot
/dev/sda3 1077 4149 3146752 Linux
/
...

As you see, my root device is /dev/sda3, aka 803.
I use lilo (on the mbr).

Why does it hang? Any help would be appreciated...
