    A major change between GPG and GPG2 is that all the crypto 
    operations have been moved to the GPG agent, so without an 
    agent, GPG2 can't work.
As I do not have solid knowledge about the subject, the above answer should 
be taken with a grain of salt.
In addition, gpg has --verbose --verbose, deliberatly doubling. Perhaps 
gpg2 has that too.
