I'd look at the source of the ddcutil program to see what conditions can
make it print ‘Display not found’ as that might give a clue as to what
particular step is failing.

There's also looks to be lots of documentation on ddcutil's site,
e.g. https://www.ddcutil.com/config_steps/ suggests ‘ddcutil
environment’ and ‘ddcutil usbenvironment’.  There are other pages on
that site worth looking at.
