In years past, Arch recommended making software changes and updates from a standard terminal, not within a desktop. That said, I have frequently violated that rule without ill effect (though I shutdown the desktop if I have a machine needing a month of updates or so).

If you want to launch pacman in an xterm within xfce, just follow the xdg desktop file spec and create a launcher, e.g.
