Re: Update gajim and python-nbxmpp

Hello. Will the gajim and python-nbxmpp packages in the community
repository be updated?
Hello,

Packages are updated, when it’s possible to update them. A typical blocker is the dependency tree. In both directions, though in the case of Gajim it’s likely to be only dependencies. Currently it’s 32 direct dependencies and 338 indirect dependencies, many in not very stable Python ecosystem. That does not include 3rd party plugins and their dependencies. Arch is known to be quick updating packages, but that isn’t the policy: it just happens to be this way. Stability is not jeopardized just for the sake of having higher version numbers.

Maintainers are volunteers and can update packages only when they have time to do so. anthraxx maintains almost 800 packages: that’s not a small number and it doesn’t seem like gajim should be a top priority entry.

In either case, if you experience issues with version 1.4.7, you may:
 1) If you know of some *serious* bugs in gajim-1.4.7-2, open a bug
report.⁽¹⁾ That will certainly push gajim update priority up.
 2) Build and install your own 1.5.2 version. Setting pkgrel to 0
will ensure an update when the official package hits repos.
If seeking help, be sure to reveal you have a custom build.
 3) If you can successfully build *and test* 1.5.2 to see that it
introduces no breakage, you may contact anthraxx and offer help.
I am sure he will be happy to get some assistance, if you can
approach the subject in good faith.
