That is what Debian does, it provides dkms, no pre-compiled modules,
perhaps for the reason you mention:
https://packages.debian.org/source/bullseye-backports/zfs-linux

The package zfs-dkms is in AUR and that requires work. Thanks!
Presumably having it in the repo would require some additional work as
well as more of a long term commitment.
