I think this somewhat improved the situation. A nicer kind of AA is now
present, and at least it's no longer blurry. But still no subpixel. This is
what I had used in ~.Xresources:

! Xft settings ---------------------------------------------------------------

Xft.dpi:        96
Xft.antialias:  true
Xft.rgba:       rgb
Xft.hinting:    true
Xft.hintstyle:  hintslight
