Wait, on second thought... pm-utils? The wiki [1] suggests s2ram
should work out of the box, and I think it has for me the last few
times I've wanted to set it up. By default it's handled by systemd
these days. Try executing

$ systemctl start suspend.target

And see if that gives you any better luck.
