As for the rest of your problems I have no idea; I’m not familiar with “autofs” or “systemd” :)
In spite of all memories to the contrary - I had not set any explicit timeout for autofs - so it was defaulting to 600. I have now changed the timeout by adding "--timeout=60" to /etc/autofs/auto.master.
