What you refer to is the bizarre ecosystem of the 'audiophiles', generally people having too much money and no technical understanding at all. They'll buy whatever is expensive, up to equipment required to periodically flush out the old and tired electrons from their left-twisting-oxygen cables and replace them with young and fresh ones.
