Working with gimp 2.8, all of the slider controls are now these
awkward highlighted regions instead of being normal sliders.

I don’t get it why GIMP doesn’t use The Gimp Toolkit (GTK) but creates its own widgets. Maybe for image editing you need different controls but this would be more an excuse than a reason.

I read about an UI redesign¹ but dunno how up-to-date this is.
