Did you try downgrading in order to confirm this being an issue with alsa-firmware? Was there anything else that got upgraded along with it? As for troubleshooting, you can check 'lsmod | grep ^snd' to see if the sound modules are loaded. Also, 'cat /proc/asound/cards' shows which soundcards were detected. Are there any errors or warnings by alsa when playing a track with mplayer or another CLI audio player?
