Hi,
I am unable to update my system. I guess this problem has occurred to me before
but unfortunately I forgot how to get around it.

[papul@archlinux ~]$ sudo pacman -Su

I just ran into the same issue. All I did was just install pacman manually not through the update process
pacman -S pacman
It did not give the complaint about gcc doing it this way then re-did pacman -Syu
finished update and all is well again.
