I stumbled across this link a few months back. Never did anything with it,
didn't even test it, but saved it for future reference. Maybe it will help.

Looks like it uses pulseaudio, but read through the entire discussion, I
think a few people offered alternate implementations towards the end. Don't
recall if they were specifically alsa.
