That's a very useful pointer, which may come in handy in similar
situations in the future - thanks.  As for mdadm, I'm in touch with
upstream to figure out where along the way from 3.1.5 to 3.2.1 things
broke.  Apparently 3.2.1 makes some unwarranted assumptions about 0.90
md arrays, and the git repository already contains patches to fix this.
