As i know, changing of gdm 2.28 theme was not supported, yet, but this program should help doing some configuring:(like change background, icon, autologin, banner text...) http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33884 gdm2setup TIPs: i found i bug of gdm2setup, if /usr/share/images/xsplash directory not existed, gdm2setup will fail to renew the background image. you can simple create this directory to solve this.
