I don't know if only the mkinitcpio update fixed the issue or if there
were other package updates from [testing] necessary because the system
update to [testing] included several other updates of important
packages like device-mapper, udev etc.

that information is not correct. yesterday i did a clean installation and i use ftp way. everything worked as expected without testing enabled.

maybe is the case for ati/intel users?
