It worked just fine on the (former ext3) partition. blkid now reports
the UUID correctly and the /dev/disk/by-label link for it is created
when plugging in the USB drive.

Haha, nice.
However I've come to wonder what the correct partition type for LUKS might be. Usually I use just 83 (Linux), but I also have an encrypted swap partition of type 82 (Linux swap / Solaris). Both work.
Linux completey ignores partition types, it's that simple :)
