David, I recently switched to the open source ati driver on my laptop (running Arch x86_64 with ATI Mobility X1600) and have been happy so far. I don't do much 3D stuff on it admittedly and I do miss the fan speed control from the catalyst drivers. Apart from that it's a nice feeling having an untainted kernel!
