In addition to this MMX would not really boost anything. SSE would be much superior. And further more: You would only notice such improvements on heavy multimedia encoding stuff and such things you would not do on an 10 years old computer.


You could say the same thing between using march=i386 vs. march=i686.
I'm for this idea, and I would even suggest bumping from i686 to
pentium3. But not any further than that, because I'm still using an
ArchLinux install on my Pentium 3 500 Mhz testbox...
