I think you want this in modprobe.conf:
alias eth0 e1000
options e1000 Speed=100 Duplex=2
This works for me, but you can check it with ethtool afterwards.
I have multiple interfaces so I skipped using the 'alias' line.
Otherwise, your suggestion worked. Looks like I need to say 'options'
first which I hadn't realized was required.
