I have today installed the latest version of Apache (2.2.17) with latest
PHP, MySql, and phpMyAdmin.  Everything seems to work but there is one thing
that puzzles me.  What is: EnterpriseDB ApachePHP and why does it refuse to
start?

Looks like a build of Apache and PHP from a company called
enterprisedb. Google can probably provide more info.

It's probably sharing ports with your normal Apache webserver, but it
always helps to share a verbatim error message.

Oh no.  The build is kosher MySQL from Sun.  The graphics of the error message is at this link:

The actual build is from here <MySQL Community Server>:

hth.
