mod_proxy's ProxyPass has a MYRIAD of options:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mod_proxy.html#proxypass

I've been told on a number of occasions that the defaults aren't
necessarily suited best for everybody's needs.

Tweak them, making one change at a time, observe the change,
document your success and failures here.
